Just 28 more days! ACK!

Memories of Christmases Past…

I was just sitting here reminiscing about Christmases with Mom and Buzz. One Christmas Eve while we were living in Napanee, we were walking home from our neighbour’s Christmas Eve party. Buzz and Mom both swore they heard the jingling of bells on Santa’s sleigh and a “Ho– Ho-Ho” as he flew overhead. Of course I could “hear” it too, but my 5 year old eyes strained in the dark to see any sign of the beloved jolly old man in a red suit or his eight reindeer. I remember it was very starry that night. The air was crisp and I remember exhaling hard so I could see my breath. Mom and Buzz said I’d better get home quick, quick! and jump into bed so Santa could come to our house and deliver my toys. Selfishly, I never wondered if he’d bring anything for my parents! Sorry, Mommy.

One year, probably one year before that, we were living in Kingston in a basement apartment. #2 if I remember correctly. I had a hamster named Thunder. (My dad had a gerbil named Lightning – I thought I was being particularly clever naming my hamster Thunder!) When I got up in the morning and went out to the living room, it was pointed out to me that there were cheesies in Thunder’s cage! “Well who put them there?” I asked in wonderment and giggling hysterically. “Santa must have put them there for Thunder for Christmas.” I thought that was the best Christmas because Santa was thoughtful enough to think of Thunder too. Huh. Cool. Except then I looked at the door. And then I looked all around. And then I said, “Well, how did Santa get in here if we don’t have a chimney?” “Ummmmm…… ummmmm…. uh……. ohh…. yeah, wait, he has a KEY! Yeah. A key. That’s it.”

The whole point of my trip down memory lane was that now with the internet, we have much better Santa tracking capabilities! Be sure to track the old fat man and his sleigh of loot at Norad Tracks. They use radar, Santa Cams, satellites and jet fighter aircraft to track the old coot. Imagine!

View Article  Getting to know you

Uhhh, thanks Hey-her! (Heather)

1.    How many siblings do you have, and of those how many do you have a relationship with?

I have 4 brothers and sisters, just as many parents and I’m an only child. I would like to think I have relationships with them all! I am the oldest and 8 years, 11 years and 18 years separate us. The years certainly are a factor and mostly distance. Plus, I’m a bit of a hermit and love being home with my puddies, my dog and my hubby.

2.    Have you ever been published, and if so, what?

If having an abstract published in a book for a conference that my boss and I attended counts. Though, I didn’t really write the abstract!

 3.    What is your full name?

Mandolin

4.                Who are you named after?

5.                What is the furthest you have been away from home?

huh, well, I’m not sure. Probably Amsterdam.

 6.    Have you ever been featured in a local paper, and if so, what paper, what for?

Yes, the Napanee Beaver. I was a majorette when I was 6 and I got a trophy! Then in High School I was in the Pembroke paper for being a brown noser, I mean for being a Peer Tutor.

7.    What was your most profound dream?

Well, about a week before we heard about Bandit, I dreamt about him. He was in our house and was trying to get me to follow him. I was petting him and telling him, “It’s ok. I’m here now.” And POOF! There he was!

 8.    Do you believe in a higher power or being?

Yep. I often feel that I am not alone - that there are angels with me, watching over me. I also believe that we all are interconnected with one another.

9.                What place in the whole world is special to you?

Wellllllllll……. Bon Echo Provincial Park stole my heart years ago. Mexico will always be dreamy because that’s where we had our honeymoom and Costa Rica – was breathtakingly beautiful for me.

I love water. Anywhere there is water and quiet – that’s for me!

 10.   What person do you look up to and why?

I don’t know. I suppose the answer is in the interpretation of this question.

11.   If you had a million dollars to give to charity, which charity would it be?

The Casa Disco fund. New roof, we have mice, electrical, painting, new windows, landscaping, deck…..

12.   What 3 people, living or dead, would you like to have dinner with?

my Grandpa. He died when I was little and I still miss him very much. When I’m with Ross’s Grandpa, it makes me miss Grandpa more because I wonder what things we would do together, if he would still be calling me Pumkin and Princess, would we have a beer together, would we stay up all night laughing and talking….

does Superman count? I’d die to have dinner with Superman! How awesome would that be? Seriously!

My great great great great great Grandmother, Sarah. My Grandma  has a cross stitch sampler that Sarah did when she was 7 or 9 in the 1700’s. I’d love to visit her time, have tea and do some stitching with her!

13.   If you had a free day with unlimited resources, what would you do?

BUY MORE YARN, MORE PATTERNS, and go to somewhere in the Caribbean and knit myself a rum punch!

14.   Would you rather be buried or cremated?

I’ve always wanted to be buried, but Ross was to be cremated, so maybe I’ll get torched. Not sure.

15.   What did you want to be when you grew up?

A nurse. I wrote an essay in grade 3 about what I wanted to be when I grew up and won the Governor General’s award. Part of my prize was an Amelia Bedelia book.

Does anyone answer “hooker” or “bank robber”? Just asking.

16.   If you could be remembered for two things, what would it be?

Kindness and funniness! Ok, 2 things!

17.   If you could change something about yourself, what would it be?

My iron level!

18.   What is the most remarkable book you have ever read?

I have no idea! Ok, WICKED! lol

19.   What movie had the most impact on your life?

I have no idea! I wouldn’t say any movie had an “Impact” on my life other than it made me laugh or I loved it so much I watched it repeatedly like Princess Bride, Labyrinth, Pretty Woman, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Gone With The Wind…… Actually, probably Princess Bride since the theme song was our wedding song “Storybook Love” by Mark Knopfler….

20.            What do you do in your spare time?

Knit, crochet, cross stitch, mostly make gifts for everyone, play with Bandit and pick up after all my animals!

 21.   What was the last act of kindness you did for someone?

Well, it was only like 2 days ago and it was at work.

22.   Who enhances your life?

Ross. Bandito. My family. Great friends who are the lifelong kind.

23.   Which friend makes your face light up?

Pamie, because she loves me after all these years – Erol because he did the 50 km  Ride for Heart with me - but really, every one of them!

24.   Are you doing what you love, and if not, why?

Yes and no. I love what I’m doing. But I have a dream. I just have to give it a little time….

25.   Are you superstitious?

No. I love black puddies.

26.            If you had to choose between having your hearing or your sight, which would it be?

Sight!!! (I need to be able to knit, crochet, cross stitch…)

 27.   What brings you joy?

simple things – the way my dog snuggles up to me, when my husband comes home with a lovely surprise, sitting on my back steps early in the morning with a cup of coffee and my dog sitting next to me - listening to the birds and the quietness of the neighbourhood, sharing a laugh and some fun with the patients at the hospital, doing something nice for someone in need, being told that I am appreciated, new pajamas, a cup of tea, finishing a project, snuggling down on a cold day in my jammies with my favourite movie

28.   What makes you sad?

the loss of a loved one, PMS, not hearing from people that matter the most to me … oh and not getting my way

29.   What is your favorite season?

Fall. I love the leaves, jeans and sweaters, apple cider … the smell of the leaves and the earth….. I just love it.

30.   What is your favorite holiday?

Christmiskuh (weekoffworkikuh)

31.   If you could pick one person to travel with, who would it be?

Ross. He pays!

32.   What do you never leave home without?

My keys! Ok, seriously, my knitting bag.

33.   Have you ever stolen anything?

When I was little, I was a little clepto. Right, mommy? Oh, and when I was in high school too ;)

34.   What have you done that you are most proud of?

Aged gracefully? I have no idea!

35.   What are your special talents?

I’m intuitive. Very intuitive. I know what you’re thinking. Stop that! How rude!

36.   What most offends you?

Drivers who don’t signal. This is very frustrating when I’m walking Bandit! SIGNAL DAMMIT!

37.   What is so beautiful it takes your breath away?

Bandit!

38.   What makes you laugh until you wet your pants?

My mom! We nearly wet our pants the other night on the phone!

39.   What is your favourite sound?

Well I’ll tell you what it’s not – farts! My favourite sound is a bird - a particular bird. When we lived in Kingston when I was 5, I’d go to bed when the sun was still shining - dusk. That’s when the bird would sit outside my window and sing. Also, there’s another bird that usually is in marshy areas. I remember it from the bird sanctuary near Windsor! What’s that place called again?

40.   What is your favourite smell?

Again. It’s definitely not farts! My favourite smell is the one I remember of my grandpa. He smelled like his pipe tobbaco. Sometimes, if I close my eyes, I can still smell that smell.

41.   Who do you miss the most?

Grandpa, Auntie Louie, Nana…. and many more.

42.   What's the thing that you see in others that you dislike in yourself?

Lots of things I’m sure. Big boobs. I HATE big boobs. Oh wait, I don’t have big boobs. Sorry. What’s the next question?

43.   What's the saying you have heard or seen that stands out in your memory?

Gotta do the best  you can with what you’ve got.

There’s no such thing as CAN’T. There’s only WON’T!”

Til death do us part.

Ask and ye shall receive.

Do unto others as you’d have done to you.

We’re here for a good time, not a long time; so have a good time. The sun can’t shine everyday.

44.   What you want to learn?

Sign Language, French, how to quilt & sew, how to drive…..

View Article  Addicted to Pirates and Pirattitude...

Searching for pirate-y stuff online, I found this website Talk Like A Pirate and found this Little Miss Muffet rhyme Pirated up.

Before:

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet
Eating her curds and whey
Along came a spider
Who sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away

With Pirattitude:

A proud beauty, Little Miss Muffet
Embarked with her matey on her tuffet
Making lubbers eat her foul curds and whey. Arrr!
Avast! Along came a behemoth bilge rat
Who smartly sat at her starboard stern
And scared Miss Muffet all the way to the depths of Davey Jones’ Locker. Arrr!

I totally prefer the Pirate version! ARRRRRGH!
